What is the ruling on fasting when saliva comes out of the mouth during sleep and some of it returns to the mouth, or when the liquid that has gathered at the corners of the mouth is swallowed upon waking? Is it obligatory to rinse the mouth in this case? And what is the ruling on the fasts of previous days during which this occurred?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Swallowing saliva does not break a fasting person's fast unless it is after it has exited the mouth. There is no need to rinse the mouth from saliva because it is pure. What breaks a fasting person's fast is intentionally doing something that invalidates the fast. If one is asleep or forgetful, their fast is valid.
