The answer

Do not initiate the greeting of 'Salam' with Jews and Christians. If they greet you, say: "Wa 'alaykum" (And upon you). If it is known that the disbeliever said "Al-salamu alaykum" (Peace be upon you), then it is permissible to respond with "Wa 'alaykum al-salam" (And peace be upon you too).
