What is the ruling on buying chicken and beef from general stores in Western countries, and must a Christian slaughter or sacrifice like a Muslim for their slaughtered animals to be permissible?
The Quran, , and the consensus of Muslims all affirm the permissibility of eating the slaughtered animals of the People of the Book, based on the Almighty's saying: (This day [all] good foods have been made lawful for you. And the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them) [Al-Ma'idah: 5]. Thus, whatever they slaughter according to Islamic law is permissible. However, whatever they deprive of life through other methods, such as stunning or strangulation, is considered carrion and is not permissible to eat, based on the Almighty's saying: (Prohibited to you are carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine) [Al-Ma'idah: 3].
