What is the ruling on continuing an emotional relationship with a man who has been religiously uncommitted for eight years, knowing that he has found stable employment but has not yet proposed marriage?

A Muslim woman must turn her heart away from attachment to non-mahram (definition) men and repent to Allah for prolonged relationships. She must adhere to obedience and supplicate to achieve her aspirations, among them marriage to a righteous man. If she is able to propose to this man for marriage and remain steadfast in obedience, that is preferable, based on the hadith (definition): "We have not seen for two who love one another anything like marriage." If he does not desire marriage or is not keen on commitment, then she must distance herself from him, increase her supplication, and present herself to one whose religion and character are pleasing.
