The answer

For an animal to be lawful () for consumption, three conditions must be met: invoking Allah's name upon it at the time of slaughter (tasmiyah), causing the blood to flow, and the slaughterer being a Muslim or a person of the Book (Christian or Jew). Anything beyond these concerning the method of slaughter is a (prophetic tradition). The Sunnah is to differentiate between camels (which are slaughtered while standing by thrusting a knife into the jugular vein – nahr) and sheep and cattle (which are slaughtered while lying down – dhabh). However, if an animal that is typically nahr-ed is dhabh-ed, or vice versa, it is permissible, and this does not affect the validity of the slaughtered animal.
