The answer

The maximum duration of menstruation is fifteen days according to the majority of scholars. Yellowish and brownish discharges connected to menstruation are considered part of it. One must wait until purity is seen (white discharge or dryness) and then perform , provided this occurs before exceeding fifteen days.

If the blood and its associated discharges exceed fifteen days, the woman is considered to have Istihada (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding). Scholars differ on the ruling for a woman with Istihada who has a regular habit and can distinguish between blood types; some oblige her to follow her habit, while others oblige her to follow the distinction.

If the blood has the characteristics of menstrual blood (color, smell, thickness), it is considered menstruation. After it ceases, she performs ablution for each prayer after its time has begun. If there is no distinction, she follows her habit if she has one. If she does not have a habit, she sits for six or seven days, as is common for menstruating women, then performs ghusl and does what a woman with Istihada does.
