Online interaction between young men and women in public groups, even if it seems further removed from suspicion than private communication, often leads to private interaction. Blocking the means to the unlawful is a fundamental principle in Islamic law, and the temptation of women is the most severe trial for men. Jurists have set conditions for permissible communication between genders, among the most prominent of which is the existence of a need that necessitates speech. The public nature of the topic alone is insufficient, and speaking with a non-mahram (definition) woman is not permissible without need, due to the suspicion of temptation. With the weakening of piety and modesty, the distance between public and private communication has shrunk. Women do not refrain from speaking in a soft manner (khudu' bil qawl), nor do young men refrain from requesting private communication.
