Is the obligation of Hajj restricted to men to the exclusion of women, and what is the proof for that from the Sunnah or the Qur’an?
Hajj is an individual obligation (fard ayn) upon every sane, mature, and able Muslim once in a lifetime. It is one of the pillars of Islam, and its obligation is established by the Quran, , and scholarly consensus (Ijma'). From the Quran, Allah Almighty says: ﴿And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka‘bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance and provision) for it. And whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then let him know that] Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)﴾ [Al ‘Imran/97]. From the Sunnah, the states: ﴿Islam has been built upon five… and Hajj.﴾ The Ummah has unanimously agreed upon its obligation once in a lifetime for those who are able.
