A fasting person avoids things that invalidate the fast, such as eating, drinking, intercourse, intentional vomiting, and masturbation. For women, menstruation and post-natal bleeding [also invalidate it], as does the intention to break the fast. They also avoid the afflictions of the tongue, such as backbiting and slander, and looking at or listening to what is forbidden. It is disliked to spend the day sleeping and the night staying up for what is not beneficial, and to neglect reading the Qur'an and performing [night prayers].
