What is the ruling on women driving cars, given the high number of accidents resulting from their driving, and is there any evidence from the Sunnah regarding this, and what is the ruling on her driving when there is a necessity due to the absence of a mahram?

Contemporary scholars differ on the ruling concerning women driving cars. The fatwa (definition) we adopt is that it is permissible, provided it does not lead to something forbidden. Its permissibility is further emphasized if there is no one else available to drive the car for her. Those who permit it argue that just as it is permissible for a woman to ride and lead a beast of burden, a car is even more fitting because it offers more concealment. What is mentioned about most accidents being caused by women driving is incorrect; excessive speed is the primary cause.
