How should I deal with a gathering in which backbiting and slander are practiced, and what should I do to stop it?

Whoever hears backbiting or slander must rebuke the speaker, advise him, and explain to him the seriousness of what he has uttered. If he is unable to rebuke, then he must leave that gathering.
