What is the religious ruling on avoiding a friend who talks about her home's secrets and the secrets of her brothers' wives, divulges the secrets of those who confide in her, meddles in others' affairs, and creates problems, and to suffice with only greeting her when seen while avoiding talking to her on the phone?

It is not permissible to accompany or befriend the woman described due to her characteristics of backbiting (ghibah (definition)), tale-bearing (namimah (definition)), and divulging secrets. She must be advised and warned. Backbiting is mentioning your brother with what he dislikes, and tale-bearing is conveying speech between people with the intention of causing mischief. Both are forbidden by the Quran, Sunnah (definition), and consensus (ijma'), and are among the major sins. Similarly, divulging secrets is not permissible because it is a breach of trust. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever conceals a Muslim, Allah will conceal him in this world and the Hereafter."
