connotation, which bear only one meaning and about which there is no dispute, such as
the specific numbers in punishments and , and those of probabilistic
connotation, which bear more than one interpretation, such as the meaning of
“quru’” in Surat al-Baqarah. This latter type is what causes scholars to differ. The
issue of treating with unlawful substances is one of the matters about which scholars
have differed because it contains a text that allows for interpretation.
