The answer

Usury is of two types: an overt type, which is loan-based usury (riba al-nasiah), and a subtle type, which is trade-based usury (riba al-fadl). Both are evil. Riba al-nasiah is forbidden in itself due to its immense harm; it occurs when a debt is deferred and the amount of money increases, entrapping the needy, harming the debtor, and increasing the usurer’s wealth without benefit. Riba al-fadl is forbidden because it is a gateway to riba al-nasiah. For instance, selling one dirham for two dirhams in cash leads to delayed profit, which is riba al-nasiah. Thus, it was forbidden as a preventive measure (sadd al-dhari'ah).
