Is there Zakat on cotton?

Zakat (definition) is not obligatory on cotton because it is not among the categories upon which Zakat is due. It is neither a grain nor a fruit nor a measurable commodity. Its ruling is similar to that of vegetables in that Zakat is not obligatory on it, and this is the opinion of the majority of scholars. However, if the cotton is prepared for trade after its harvest, then it becomes a trade commodity, and Zakat becomes obligatory on it at that point.
