Is Zakat obligatory on inherited real estate?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
There is no on inherited real estate if it is not intended for sale, by consensus, or if it is intended for trade according to the majority of scholars, because the condition for an asset to be considered a trade good is that it enters into the ownership of the مكلف (financially responsible person) through an exchange, not through inheritance. Some scholars, however, hold the view that zakat becomes obligatory merely upon the intention of trading, in which case a quarter of a tenth of its value is to be paid as zakat when a full year has passed.
