Commercial insurance, in all its forms, is unlawful according to Islamic law because it involves (excessive uncertainty), jahalah (ignorance), and riba (usury). This is in contrast to cooperative insurance, which is based on donation, mutual support, and cooperation in righteousness, and is therefore permissible. For this reason, it is not permissible to deal with commercial insurance companies, but it is permissible to deal with cooperative insurance companies.
