Is it permissible to take out a loan from a bank to buy an apartment for housing due to not owning a home and the high cost of rent, and is this considered one of the necessities that permit prohibited acts?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Borrowing with interest is forbidden for purchasing a house or anything else, except in a case of lawful necessity. This includes someone who cannot find housing except through this means, or if rent consumes their income to the extent that it is insufficient for them and their dependents. However, if it is possible to rent without excessive hardship, then borrowing with interest is forbidden. One can deal with Islamic banks as a lawful alternative. It is forbidden for a Muslim to deal with interest-based banks if it is possible for them to deal with an Islamic bank.
