The question

Is it permissible to buy and sell shares of companies like Apple and Microsoft, which do not pay dividends and whose profits and losses depend on the selling price, taking into account the possibility that these companies deal with bank interest, and is it permissible to buy shares from companies that distribute dividends?

The answer

The ruling on the shares of a particular company cannot be made without knowledge of its activities and finances. For the purchase of shares to be permissible, two conditions must be met: that the company's activity is permissible, and that it does not deal with usury (neither depositing nor borrowing). If its activity is permissible but it deals with usury, then it is a mixed company, and scholars have differed concerning its ruling. Some of them hold the view that investing in it is absolutely forbidden, which is the resolution issued by the Islamic Fiqh Academy, while others permit it with specific controls, provided that usurious gains are disposed of. It is recommended for a Muslim to avoid disagreement by taking the more cautious approach. The presence or absence of profits does not change the ruling on a mixed company as long as it deals with usury.
