Is it permissible to own shares in American companies specialized in computers and pharmaceuticals, purchased through a broker in a Riba-based bank, and what should be done if that is impermissible?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
A Muslim is not permitted to deposit his money in a usurious bank, whether with or without interest, except if there is a fear of the money being stolen or lost and no Islamic bank is available. It is permissible to buy shares in companies, provided that they do not engage in forbidden dealings such as usury. If a company is compelled to deposit funds in a usurious bank for safekeeping, reference should be made to No. 39238. There is no objection to the bank taking commissions for a service it performs.
