The answer

Scholars differed on the obligation of congregational prayer in the mosque, holding two views:

1. First View: The obligation of congregational prayer in the mosque. They supported this with evidence, including: The Prophet (peace be upon him) intended to burn the houses of those who failed to attend congregational prayer. He commanded a blind man, who could not find a guide, to pray in the mosque after hearing the call to prayer. Ibn Mas'ud considered missing prayer in the mosque a sign of the hypocrites. The : "Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not come, there is no prayer for him except for an excuse."

2. Second View: The lack of obligation for congregational prayer in the mosque. They supported this with evidence, including: The hadith: "The earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purification." The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed with a visitor in his house when he was ill. Itban ibn Malik requested the Prophet (peace be upon him) to pray in his house so he could take it as a place of prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded two men who had prayed in their dwellings to pray with the congregation in the mosque, and their prayer would be supererogatory.
