The question

What should I do if I enter the mosque to pray Dhuhr and Asr combined in a delayed manner (jama' ta'kheer) and find people praying Asr in congregation? Should I pray Asr with them and then make up Dhuhr, or should I pray Dhuhr and Asr combined in a delayed manner individually?

The answer

It is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he used to combine prayers in order: Dhuhr, then Asr, then Maghrib, then Isha. Based on this, the described situation allows for combining between two options:

1. Praying individually in order (Dhuhr then Asr), especially since the majority of scholars do not obligate congregational prayer upon the traveler. 2. Praying with the congregation with the intention of Dhuhr prayer, even if their intention is Asr prayer, as the unity of intention between the Imam and the follower in the exact prayer is not a condition. It should be noted that if a traveler prays behind a resident, he must complete the prayer.
