Is it sunnah for Muslims to raise their hands during the Imam's supplication on Friday, knowing that it is sunnah for the Imam not to raise his hands, and do they sin if they raise them, and what are the jurists' opinions on this issue?

The preponderant view is that it is sunnah (definition) for both the Imam and the congregants not to raise their hands during supplication (du'a) in the Friday sermon (khutbah (definition)), and this is the madhhab (definition) of the Hanbalis, Shafi'is, and Malikis. The evidence for this is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not raise his hands in the Friday sermon nor in the Eid sermon, and the Companions disapproved of those who raised their hands, except in the supplication for rain (Istisqa'), where it is authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his hands.
