What is the ruling on sleeping during the Friday sermon?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
It is not permissible to deliberately sleep during the Friday sermon, because listening attentively is obligatory. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade ihtiba’ (sitting with one’s knees drawn up to the chest) on Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon, the reason being the fear of falling asleep, which could invalidate ablution and cause one to miss listening to the sermon. As for someone overcome by sleep, he is not sinful, and he should try to resist sleep as much as possible. If he falls into a deep sleep, he must perform ablution for the prayer.
