What is the ruling on the imamate of the new preacher who invokes the status of the Messenger and the righteous, and says that the Khawarij are believers?
According to the most preponderant opinion, the Friday prayer does not have a regular prayer before it. It is recommended for whoever enters the mosque before it to pray Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque prayer) or any supererogatory prayers they wish, or to engage in dhikr (remembrance of God) and recitation until the sermon begins. Lawful tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah) is through Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes, or through good deeds, or by the supplication of a righteous living person. The Imam must be advised to restrict tawassul to that which is lawful by presenting the evidence. If he persists in unlawful tawassul, it is preferable to pray behind someone else if available. Otherwise, it is not permissible to abandon the congregational prayer. As for the Khawarij, we do not consider them disbelievers.
