The answer

Reciting the opening supplication (Du'a al-Istiftah) in a place other than its prescribed position does not affect the validity of the prayer. As for whether it necessitates a prostration of forgetfulness ( al-sahw), there are two opinions on the matter. If a prostration of forgetfulness were to be prescribed, it would be on the basis of recommendation (nadb), not obligation (wujub). If the worshiper is a follower (ma'mum), then no prostration is required of him, as the Imam bears it on his behalf.
