Is it obligatory to alert the Imam if he inadvertently performs one of the transitional takbirat out of its proper place and does not perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw), or is it sufficient for one to individually perform the prostration of forgetfulness after the taslim, and is the prayer invalidated by not performing the prostration of forgetfulness in this case?

The takbirat al-intiqal (transition takbirs) are recited between the pillars of prayer, which is their designated place, so that the prayer encompasses remembrance of Allah. The majority of jurists consider them to be sunnah (definition) (recommended), and therefore, the prayer is valid, and the worshiper is not required to do anything if they recite them out of their proper place or omit them.

The Hanbalis, however, consider them obligatory, and whoever omits them out of forgetfulness must perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud (definition) al-sahw). The takbir begins with the start of the transition and ends with its completion. Some jurists hold that the prayer is valid even if the takbir is partially completed outside its proper place, to alleviate hardship and difficulty. It is not obligatory to alert the Imam after every prayer regarding the prostration of forgetfulness, as the prayer is valid in all cases according to most scholars.
