What is the ruling on looking at the Noble Kaaba during prayer in Mecca?

The majority of scholars hold the view that a worshiper, while standing, should look towards the place of his prostration. This is based on what was narrated about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that when he prayed, he would lower his head and cast his gaze towards the ground. This does not differ for one who prays next to the Kaaba or far from it. Therefore, whoever looks at the Kaaba during prayer is abandoning this Sunnah (definition). Imam Malik and his companions differed, going to the view that the worshiper should look straight ahead, according to his natural posture, neither raising nor lowering his head. They cited as evidence the Almighty's saying: "So turn your face toward Al-Masjid Al-Haram (definition)."
