The question

How can a traveler shorten the Dhuhr prayer behind a resident Imam, and does he delay two rak'ahs behind him? And what is the ruling on separating after the middle Tashahhud with the intention of praying 'Asr as a shortened prayer behind the same Imam who is praying Dhuhr?

The answer

A traveler, if he prays behind a resident Imam, must complete the prayer and is not allowed to shorten it. He must make up the Dhuhr and Asr prayers that he shortened behind the resident Imam.
