What is the ruling on shortening the 'Asr prayer without combining it with the Dhuhr prayer?

It is not a condition for shortening the four-rak'ah prayers during travel that they be combined with the prayer before or after them. A traveler shortens Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha to two rak'ahs, whether he prays them individually or combines them with another prayer.
