The answer

Scholars differed regarding the ruling on wiping the ears during ablution (wudu'). The majority held that it is a (recommended), while the Hanbalis and some Malikis deemed it obligatory. This is also the view chosen by the Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas. As for the method of wiping, one wipes the inside of the ears with the index fingers and their outside with the thumbs. It is not obligatory to meticulously trace the folds of the ears with the wiping, as narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them).
