The second opinion: It is not obligatory, based on the hadith of Umm Salamah: "It is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls [of water] over your head," coupled with her mention of her tightly braided hair, and because hair is not part of the living being.
The preponderant opinion is the obligation to wash the loose hair by pouring water over it, without undoing braided hair.
