The jurists differed on the ruling concerning rinsing the mouth (madmadah) and nose (istinshaq) during ablution (wudu) and ritual bath (ghusl (definition)). The Malikis and Shafi'is hold that they are Sunnah (definition) (recommended acts) in both wudu and ghusl, and ghusl is valid without them, but it is not appropriate to intentionally omit them. The Hanbalis and Hanafis view them as obligatory in ghusl, so they must not be omitted, considering them part of the face to which water must be delivered. Thus, whoever desires a complete ghusl should perform wudu, then rinse their mouth and nose. Whoever desires a sufficient ghusl should ensure water reaches their mouth and nose.
