The question

What is the ruling on the prayer of one who is in a state of ritual impurity (junub) and only a few minutes remain until the Fajr prayer is established, and if he performs ghusl, he will miss the prayer? Should he perform wudu and pray, then perform ghusl after returning? What is the ruling on one who fears illness if he performs ghusl and immediately goes out for Fajr prayer? Should he perform wudu and pray, then perform ghusl after returning? What is the ruling on praying behind callers to Murji’ism?

The answer

The person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) must perform (full ritual bath) for prayer, by consensus. It is not permissible to suffice with ablution (wudu) only, and their prayer without ghusl is invalid. If you wake up in a state of major ritual impurity and fear missing the congregational prayer, ghusl is obligatory even if you miss the congregation. If you fear missing the prayer time, ghusl is obligatory even if the time expires, according to the majority of scholars. If you fear illness by going to the mosque after ghusl, you may perform ghusl and pray in your home, and you have a dispensation to miss the congregational prayer. Praying behind a person of innovation who has not left the fold of Islam is valid.
