What was the method the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used for performing ghusl (ritual bath) after major ritual impurity with a very small amount of water?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to perform ghusl (definition) (ritual bath) with one saa' (a measure of volume). Part of his guidance regarding economizing water was 'ad-dalk' (rubbing), which involves passing the hand over the body while pouring water. Some jurists have stated that it is not appropriate to exceed three washings for the ablution (wudu'). It is not obligatory to limit the water for ghusl to one saa' if it is insufficient to cover the entire body. The aim is to cover the entire outer surface of the body with water without extravagance or excessiveness.
