What is the ruling on using the right hand for istinja and relieving oneself due to the inability to use the left hand to completely cleanse oneself from impurities?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Most scholars dislike using the right hand for ’ (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself), and some prohibit it, due to the established prohibition from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. However, if there is a valid excuse preventing the use of the left hand for istinja’, such as an amputation, paralysis, or surgery, then there is no dislike in such a case due to necessity. If it is possible to remove some of the impurity with the left hand without hardship, that is preferable, based on the Almighty’s saying: "So fear Allah as much as you are able."
