How does the Prophet's saying, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: "For I put them on while they were pure," indicate the condition of wearing the khuffayn (leather socks) over a state of ritual purity (purity of wudu'), despite the possibility that purity here refers to cleanliness and not ritual purity (purity of wudu')?

The majority of jurists stipulated, for the validity of wiping over the khuffayn, that they must be worn after a complete state of purity. They cite as evidence the hadith (definition) of Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Leave them, for I inserted my feet into them while they were pure." And the hadith of Safwan ibn 'Assal (may Allah be pleased with him): "He commanded us to wipe over the khuffayn if we had put them on while in a state of purity." Whereas Dawud al-Zahiri held the view that only the purity of the feet was required. This confirms the correctness of the majority's view and the necessity of wearing the khuffayn after a complete state of purity.
