The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted wiping over the khuffayn (leather socks) for a resident for one day and one night, and for a traveler for three days and nights. Some have used the action of Abu Bakrah, who removed his khuffayn and washed his feet, as evidence that wiping becomes invalid upon removing the khuffayn. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Others have disagreed with them, citing the action of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, as evidence. Al-Albani pointed out that the narration from Ali has a sounder chain of transmission than the narration from Abu Bakrah.
