Do oaths, vows, or conditional divorces related to the repetition or prolongation of ablution (wudu') take effect, what is the ruling on one who does that to overcome obsessive whispers (waswās), and what is required of him?

We advise the questioner to disregard the obsessive whispers (waswas) about ablution and prolonging it. It is sufficient to cover each limb with water once. Washing more than three times is an act of transgression and extremism. Do not yield to thoughts of repeating ablution, for they are from the whispers of Satan, and their cure is to ignore them. Resorting to oaths and vows is not beneficial. Breaking a single oath necessitates a single expiation for an oath. A vow contingent upon doing something requires either an expiation for an oath or fulfilling the vowed act. It is not permissible to supplicate against oneself for destruction or calamities.
