How can the problem of misusing water for ablution, which leads to wastage, be addressed?
The excellences of Islam and its elevated status in the economy of water in purification and ablution (wudu') must be demonstrated from two perspectives: First, its keenness on physical and spiritual purification. Wudu' five times a day purifies the believer from sins, as An-Nasa'i (103) narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When a believing servant performs ablution and rinses his mouth, sins exit from his mouth..." And just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave the example of a river from which a person washes five times, removing dirt, so too do the five prayers wipe away sins. Second, economy in the use of water and avoiding extravagance therein. Islam calls for economy in everything, and that includes ablution. As Sheikh Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, said, the Sacred Law came with moderation in all matters and forbade extremism, extravagance, and wastefulness, indicating that extravagance in ablution by increasing the washing beyond three times is a form of extremism. Therefore, the Sacred Law guides Muslims to economize in ablution while commanding the washing of each limb three times, thus enjoining complete cleanliness with economy and without extravagance.
