The question

Is it permissible to use a cassette recorder and headphones to prolong the recitation during the night vigil prayer (Qiyam al-Layl), given a weak memory and the desire to lengthen the prayer as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do?

The answer

Night vigil ( al-Layl) is a confirmed , beginning after 'Isha prayer and extending until dawn. Allah has praised those who perform it and promised them good. It is not permissible to substitute reading from a cassette recorder during prayer, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Pray as you have seen me praying." However, it is permissible to read from the Mus'haf (Quran) by looking at it during supererogatory prayers, and this has been authentically reported from some of the Salaf (pious predecessors).
