What is the evidence from the Quran, Sunnah, and scholarly opinions regarding the meaning of the hadith: "For your head to be struck with an iron rod and for it to be pierced is better for you than for you to touch a woman who is unlawful to you," and does it refer to touching in general or only to touching with lust?

The Hadith (definition), "For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch a woman he is not permitted to touch," was authenticated by Al-Albani. This Hadith indicates the prohibition of touching a non-mahram (definition) woman, whether with desire or without. This is supported by evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah (definition). Just as looking at a non-mahram woman is forbidden, even without desire, touching her is even more deserving of prohibition. 'A'isha supported this by stating that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, never touched the hand of any woman during the pledge of allegiance. The jurists of the four madhahib have unanimously agreed on the prohibition of touching a non-mahram woman, even if desire is absent, due to the lack of necessity.
