Some scholars are of the opinion that publicly declaring the payment of obligatory is better to clear the wealthy person of suspicion, and for those whom people emulate, and for one who is safe from ostentation. Others, however, believe that concealing charity is absolutely better, citing the verse: (If you disclose your charitable expenditures, it is well; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your evil deeds. And Allah is [fully] Acquainted with what you do). Ibn Kathir favors concealing charity, as it is further removed from ostentation, unless there is a predominant benefit in disclosing it, such as people following suit.
