The question

What is the correct wording for the intention of donating a charitable gift (sadaqa) on behalf of a deceased mother to ensure she receives the reward? What are the procedures that guarantee the reward reaches her? Is it permissible to dedicate a religious scholarly book as an ongoing charity (sadaqa jariya) for the mother's soul? Is it permissible to disclose this to the recipient? Is it permissible to write "For the sake of Allah Almighty on behalf of so-and-so, son/daughter of so-and-so" on the book?

The answer

There is no specific formula for the intention when giving charity on behalf of the deceased. Intention is merely the purpose of an action, and it is sufficient to resolve to do so when giving out the charity. If you say, "O Allah, make the reward of this for my mother," there is no harm in it. The reward of charity reaches the deceased and benefits them, for Muslims have unanimously agreed that giving charity on behalf of the deceased benefits them and reaches them. It is permissible to give charity on behalf of the mother with water, food, Qur'ans, and books.
