What should a Muslim do with money earned from trading tobacco, and is it permissible for him to keep his lawful money?

Whoever repents from trading in prohibited goods should spend its profits on charitable causes as a purification, not as a charity. If unlawful money is mixed with lawful money, it should be estimated and disbursed until it is highly probable that the money is pure. A person who was a disbeliever when earning unlawful gains and then embraced Islam is not required to disburse them. However, a Muslim who earned unlawful gains, knowing them to be prohibited, and then repented, is required to disburse whatever unlawful gains they possess.
