Does the reward for gifting a sheep to a poor family for them to sacrifice on Eid al-Adha reach the deceased father, or is it better to sacrifice on behalf of the father and give the meat of the sacrifice as charity?
There is no objection for a Muslim to directly slaughter the sacrificial animal () on behalf of his father, or to appoint someone to slaughter it for him in his country or abroad. It is preferable for him to carry out the slaughter himself.
If the intention behind gifting a sheep to a poor family is for them to sacrifice it on behalf of the giver's father, then this is a permissible authorization, and the reward of the sacrifice will reach the father.
However, if the intention is for the family to sacrifice it on their own behalf, then this is an act of charity for which the giver will be rewarded, but it is not considered a sacrifice on his behalf.
