What is the ruling on dealing with an animal designated for sacrifice (Uḍḥiya) that was not slaughtered due to unforeseen circumstances, and is it permissible to sell it and buy a sacrifice for next year with its price, or to raise it for breeding and sacrifice its offspring?

The Udhiyah (definition) (sacrifice) is a confirmed Sunnah (definition), not obligatory, according to the majority of jurists. It becomes obligatory in specific cases, such as vowing it or designating it verbally. If an animal is designated for Udhiyah verbally, then sacrificing it becomes obligatory, and if the time for slaughtering passes, it should be slaughtered immediately and there is no need to wait for the next Eid. However, if the intention was mere without verbal designation, then the Udhiyah is not obligatory with that animal, and it is permissible to dispose of it by selling or other means.
