Placing a pacifier for a child is permissible if it is for a legitimate purpose, such as accustoming him to patience regarding breastfeeding or food, based on the about fasting the Day of Ashura. However, if it is merely to deceive the child and lie to him, then it is not permissible, due to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) prohibition of lying, even to children.
