Is it permissible to describe Imam Ali with "peace and blessings be upon him" by analogy with invoking blessings upon the Family of the Prophet in the Tashahhud?
Scholars differed regarding the ruling on invoking blessings upon others than the Prophets. Some held that it is permissible absolutely, while others allowed it only when accompanying the Prophet's name, not independently, fearing it might become a slogan for the Rafidah (Shi'a).
Ibn al-Qayyim elaborated on the issue, stating: If the invocation of blessings is upon the Prophet's family, his wives, and his progeny, it is permissible whether accompanying the Prophet's name or individually. If it is upon angels and people of obedience in general, it is permissible. However, dedicating the invocation of blessings to a specific person or group such that it becomes a permanent slogan is disliked (), and it may be forbidden () if it is adopted as a special slogan and others are prevented from using it, as the Rafidah do with Ali. But if one occasionally invokes blessings upon others than the Prophet without adopting it as a slogan, there is no harm in it. This detailed explanation reconciles the various evidences.
