Is it permissible to sell a gift?

The common saying, "A gift is neither gifted nor sold," is incorrect and contrary to Islamic law. Whoever lawfully possesses a gift has the right to dispose of it through sale, lease, gifting, or endowment. The Sunnah (definition) of the Prophet demonstrates this, including: the Prophet's gifting of what was given to him to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the permissibility of selling a gift as in the hadith (definition) of Umar and his robe, and the recipient's right to dispose of his gift as he wishes, as in the hadith of Bakr ibn Umar.
